One only needs to see something like this image—trees marked for mast making—to grasp the connection to the natural world evident in wooden boat building. Whereas modern boats are formed of materials like fiberglass and plastic, these wooden boats are a synergy between man and nature. That purity is one of the things that attracted me to this project. The skill that goes into turning a resources like trees, and forming them into the shapes and lumber required to make a boat to carry people, supplies, tools and equipment is clearly evident when you see this photo. There is much to be respected and preserved.
